Octa and Axio: building an active fall/winter layering system
Distinguish base layer, fleece midlayer and active insulation through three 26/27FW models. Adjust for exertion, wind, rain and stops rather than choosing a complete kit by material name or a fixed temperature.
Compare roles before models
| Model | Layer role | Catalogue information |
|---|---|---|
| Axio 3D Hoody | Fall/winter base layer | Men’s M 315g; women’s M 230g |
| Global Octa Jacket | Active insulation | Stretch Octa Bonding; M 220g |
| OCTA Fleece Tec Hoody | Lightweight fleece midlayer | Octa Fleece; no weight inferred here |
Each layer has a different job
A base layer sits next to the body, a midlayer adds activity-appropriate warmth, and a shell addresses wind and rain exposure. Assign Axio 3D Hoody, Global Octa Jacket and OCTA Fleece Tec Hoody to those roles before deciding how to combine them. Asking only which material is warmer misses the task. A sweaty climb, a windy ridge and a long stop place different demands on the same kit.
Understand Octa through actual models
Stretch Octa Bonding in Global Octa Jacket and Octa Fleece in OCTA Fleece Tec Hoody are different construction descriptions. Zoning, outer material, pattern and pairing all affect wear. Do not transfer one jacket’s 220g weight or material statement to the whole range. The table keeps the fields the catalogue provides, without inferring missing weight from a similar garment.
Adjust during the activity
Plan a removal and storage sequence before starting. As you warm up on a climb, use zips or remove an unnecessary layer; on an exposed ridge, add the appropriate shell; before stopping, consider extra stationary warmth. Personal response, humidity, wind and pace matter. A universal below-zero rating is not supplied here, and active insulation does not automatically replace insulation for waiting or camp.
Fit the system, not an isolated garment
Wear the intended base layer when trying a midlayer. Add the shell, raise your arms and turn to check shoulders, underarms, cuffs and hem. With multiple hoods, assess bulk around the neck; with a running pack, check comfort under the straps. A size that works alone may not work in a complete system. Testing the combination you will actually wear is more useful than ranking isolated garment weights.
Check weather protection and catalogue version
Octa and Axio names do not establish waterproofness. For sustained rain, assess the shell separately and distinguish wind shells from membrane shells. This article concerns 26/27FW, not earlier Axio Lite or other Octa products. Use the seasonal guide for the wider catalogue, then confirm current China models, sizes and stock. Appearing in a catalogue does not mean a garment is already in store.
