FRACTEL caps and Legionnaires: coverage, materials and fit
Use M-DAYBREAK, L-NEPTUNE and L-SAHARA to distinguish silhouette, neck coverage and fabric. Choose with head fit and pack interaction in mind, rather than assigning one technology to every model.
Available model records
| Model | Material listed | Size and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| M-DAYBREAK | FLOWMESH | 58cm; regular cap |
| L-NEPTUNE | REPREVE | 62cm; neck flap |
| L-SAHARA | REPREVE | 59cm; neck flap |
| L-LUMEN | Polartec Power Dry | 62cm; neck flap |
Shape defines coverage, not every performance claim
The obvious difference between a regular cap and a Legionnaire is the neck flap. Include a flap style for exposed routes or extended rear-neck exposure; compare regular caps for shorter sessions or your preferred brim view. More coverage does not eliminate other sun protection, nor does it prove that a cap is always hotter or cooler. Material, cut, wind and personal response all contribute.
Compare fabric at model level
M-DAYBREAK is recorded as FLOWMESH; L-NEPTUNE and L-SAHARA as REPREVE; L-LUMEN is the Polartec Power Dry example listed here. Mesh construction, a recycled-material identifier and a quick-drying fabric name describe different dimensions. Their names alone do not establish an overall winner. A material or UPF rating for one cap must not be transferred to every FRACTEL style.
Read size labels alongside actual fit
The 58cm, 59cm and 62cm figures come from individual model records; they are not a shared adjustment range. Measure head circumference, then check rear adjustment, placement above the ears and hold during movement. The brim should provide useful shade without obstructing downward or upward vision. Excess pressure, slipping or a flap repeatedly catching the pack are reasons to compare another fit.
Try the cap with eyewear, pack and hood
Headwear is part of a kit. Sunglass arms can pass under cap sides, a pack edge can touch the flap, and a shell hood can overlap the brim. Turn your head, look down and raise the hood to check interaction. For longer routes, test the whole combination before departure rather than using it together for the first time on the day. Follow the care label for cleaning and drying.
Shortlist by route, then check current models
For rear-neck coverage, compare L-NEPTUNE and L-SAHARA by material and fit. For a regular cap, start with M-DAYBREAK’s silhouette and FLOWMESH record. Different routes need not use the same hat, and colour alone is a weak fitting criterion. Use the product and buying links below, then confirm current colours, sizes and stock with the actual channel or TrailMo.
